Cemetery Board To Mark Nine Island Graves The Cemetery Board agreed to purchase headstones for nine people buried on Mackinac Island in unmarked graves. The headstones, to be placed in both Ste. Anne's Cemetery and Mackinac Island Cemetery, commonly referred to as the Protestant cemetery, will be purchased with a grant from the Mackinac Island Community Foundation. The Cemetery Board, meeting Thursday, July 27, said the markers will be placed on the graves of Sam Green, Tom and George Green, Herbert Chapman, Thomas Visnaw, Junior Davenport, Baby Zachary, Duncan Graham, and Charlie Higgins. One more grave will be selected, but has yet to be named, the board reported Thursday, August 3. The Cemetery Board will apply for another Foundation grant to purchase additional headstones for unmarked graves next spring. The next meeting of the Cemetery Board will be Tuesday, August 22, at 9 a.m. at Ste. Anne's Cemetery, or, if raining, at the second floor conference room at Community Hall. |
