Aug. 12 Diving Accident Results in Death of Swimmer in Lake Huron

A diving accident on the shipwreck Cedarville in Lake Huron claimed the life of Steven Kallweit, 49, of DeWitt late Saturday morning, August 12. Mr. Kallweit was one of three people diving on the ship. He surfaced, called out to a companion on the group's boat, and was found floating away from the boat, not breathing. Following resuscitation efforts aboard the boat, he was brought ashore at Mackinaw City and was transported by ambulance to Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace, where he was pronounced dead.

The incident remains under investigation by the Cheboygan County Sheriff's Department.

The 588-foot freighter Cedarville sank with a load of limestone May 7, 1965, about three miles east of the Mackinac Bridge, after colliding with a Norwegian freighter in dense fog. She lost 10 crew in the accident.
