Eiffel, the tower man, wants to build something high for the World's Fair. There's no reason for going to France for a man to build high things when there are thousands of experts in the making of high figures in this country, running summer resort hotels.

The young people would like it if the band would arrange for weekly moonlight excursions to the Island.

Edward Chambers, brother of W.P. Chambers of the steamer Algomah, died at his home on Mackinac Island last week. Deceased was a young man of fine education and beloved by those who knew him.

Thursday, August 24, 1916

Rufus Dill was at Mackinac Island Monday looking after a team he has working there for the summer.

Capt. J.W. Bennett of Bennett Hall was a business visitor in St. Ignace yesterday.

Col. Briggs of Detroit, who has a cottage at Walker's Point, Bois Blanc, was here on his yacht Sunday.

The band concerts given by the Muskegon band afternoons and evenings daily, will continue until September 3. The concerts are enjoyed by large crowds.

About 20 members of the Wa-Wash-Ka-Mo Golf Club went to Les Cheneaux last Sunday and played the Les Cheneaux Golf Club on their links, the home club being the winner.

By the appearance of the crowds, the season here has not as yet begun to dwindle. The hay fever brigade have only begun to arrive and will probably stay until the middle of Septembe,r and many until the first of October.

County School Superintendent Norman Wixson said this week that there is a shortage of elementary teachers in the rural schools of Mackinac County. Full staffs have only been obtained at Gros Cap, Moran, and St. Ignace Township.

Choosing a calm, hazy evening, David Hart, 23-yearold Straits bridge worker, on Friday, swam the Straits of Mackinac on a course closely parallel to the bridge. He made the four-mile crossing in a time of one hour, 56 minutes, and 56 seconds.

Gary Williams, son of Governor and Mrs. G. Mennen Williams, had the misfortune of falling off a horse. He sustained a sprained leg.

Moral Re-Armament informed each Mackinac Island resident last weekend of its activities on the Island. The organization, building a center for its international convention on the Island August 24-September 4, has aroused Island fears it is trying to destroy the tradition of using non-mechanized vehicles on the Island and that it may try to dominate its affairs.

Our returning teachers are Miss Margaret Doud in the kindergarten, Miss Jeanne Kaiser in the 1st and 2nd grades, Mrs. Dorothy Hart, who teaches history and social studies in the high school, and Superintendent Bill Krieger, teaching high school math and science.

The Fireman's Ball will be held at Community Hall August 28th. "The Classics" of St. Ignace will be the dance band. This annual dance is held each year by Fire Chief Armand Horn and his 14 volunteers. Proceeds from the dance are used for the children of the Island for the Fireman's annual Christmas party.

Mackinac Island Town Crier August 24 to August 30, 1996

Round Island Lighthouse received a fresh new coat of paint by John Steele and Sons painters. The project began early last week and is expected to continue through August.

Local police say parents of minors who loiter in the downtown area after 9:30 p.m. may face fines and jail time. An increasingly large number of youths congregate in downtown areas past their Mackinac Island-mandated 9:30 p.m. curfew, which has been in place for everyone under 17 since 1952, states Michigan State Police.
