School Hires New Teacher Seth Baker of Midland is Mackinac Island Public School's new social studies teacher. Craig Aho, who was selected by the school's Board of Education earlier in August, declined the offer. Superintendent Roger Schrock told the Mackinac Island Town Crier that Mr. Aho, from Trenary, chose not to come to the Island owing to family issues. Mr. Aho had visited the Island last week to search for housing, but informed the school days later that he will not be accepting the position. Mr. Baker "is an excellent candidate with great references and good experience," said Dr. Schrock. "He'll fit well with the kids and the Island." He said Mr. Baker will be visiting the Island soon to find housing. Dr. Schrock screened 34 applicants for the position and a committee of board members, teachers, and the superintendent interviewed six applicants for the position, which was vacated by Jessica Clark, who resigned at the end of July to take a part-time teaching position in Engadine, near her husband, who is also a teacher there. The school's traditional back to school barbecue will be held at the school playground Tuesday, September 5, starting at 11:30 a.m. Parents and community members are welcome to attend. |
