Scouts Greet Island Guests
Girl Scouts Ashley Steele of Traverse City (left) and Liz Dean of Muskegon greet visitors, answer questions, and count admissions to Mackinac Island State Park historic sites. While in front of the William Beaumont Museum on Market Street, Ms. Dean said this is her fourth summer at the Scout Service Camp and she plans to return next year. "I like serving other people," she said. "I love the people, I love the Island, and I like meeting other girls." Ms. Steele, who made her fifth scout trip to the Island this year, plans to return next summer. "I like the aspect of helping my state and giving back," she said. The volunteer scout program opened to Boy Scouts in 1939 and to Girl Scouts in 1974. Scouts earn merit badges and assist park staff during their one week stay on the Island.
