When school starts in the fall, Dana and Grace Roguska are going to have a new look. Both shed their long hair for short bobs to benefit Locks of Love. Dana donated hair in June 2005 and August 2006, and Grace donated for the first time this June.
Their mother, Chris Roguska, said the girls were ready to cut their hair and both made the decision to cut off enough to donate to the child cancer wig program.
A minimum of 10 inches of hair is required for donation to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss.
Most children receiving prosthetic hairpieces from Locks of Love suffer from a disease called Alopecia Areata, an autoimmune skin disease which causes the body to attack hair follicles, causing an arrest of hair growth and development. The cause of the disease is unknown and there is no known cure. Although not life-threatening, the disease can have life-altering affects on the people who suffer from it.
