Medical Center Negotiating With Beaumont To Buy Doctor's Home

The Mackinac Island Medical Center will have an opportunity to purchase the single family house on Franks Street, near Mission Point Resort, where Dr. Don Weersing and his family reside. The owner, William Beaumont Hospital of Royal Oak, intends to sell it.

Mackinac Straits Hospital CEO Rod Nelson said a price is being negotiated with Beaumont, although the house has yet to be appraised. The sale will be discussed into the winter, he said. The lease expired September 30, 2006.

"The Medical Center has the first option to purchase the house," said Medical Center Board Chair Margaret Doud. "The doctor and his family do not have to worry. They do not Cousino, pending architectural review. Commissioners noted the number of rear windows may exceed the maximum 50- percent wall coverage and this would be considered during the architectural review process.

Commissioners took no action on Commissioner Kay Hoppenrath's suggestion that all approved decisions should be contingent upon architectural review.
