New Starbucks Business Beyond 'Modernization'
To the Editor:

We read in the last issue of the Town Crier that there are plans to open a Starbucks on Main Street. How unfortunate! What's next? TCBY, KFC, maybe even McDonald's?

We first visited the Island in 1972, and for the past 25 years have spent five days there twice a year (with the exception of two years).

We subscribe to your newspaper and are charter supporters of the MICF. We have watched as some "modernization" has occurred on the Island.

But this seems to go beyond that. Of course, the residents have every right to approve whatever is proposed for the city's retail establishments. However, the ambiance, the aura, which has characterized Mackinac Island and earned accolades from across the country, may suffer if the "chains" are allowed to intrude into the retail space.
