Volleyball, Basketball Teams Gearing for Tournaments

By David Latva

Mackinac Island Lakers volleyball and basketball teams are both on the downside of their regular season schedules in preparation for the Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournaments.

Coach Mary Patay and her volleyball squad have defeated Paradise and Maplewood Baptist, split with Hannahville and Grand Marais, lost to Beaver Island and Paradise, and finished 6-7 in the Lakers Invitational held in December and 4-5 at the Ellsworth tournament.

Mackinac Island has been led by senior Kristi Kamphuis, junior Karlena Mosley, sophomores Shayleen Mosley, Danielle Wightman, Michi Mullings, and Arial Leeper, freshmen Shelbie Mosley and Jane Finkel, and eighth graders, Ashley Gough, Maggie Chambers, Marie Bunker, and Morgan Brodeur- Bunker.

The Lakers will compete in the districts at Pickford against the host Panthers, Cedarville, Brimley, and Paradise Saturday, March 3.

Coach Jim Fisher and his basketball team are just two games away from capturing the Northern Lights League (NLL) championship. During the season, the Friday game is a league game and the Saturday contest non-league.

The Lakers are undefeated in the NLL and 12-2 overall with non-league setbacks at the hands of Maplewood Baptist and Beaver Island.

Mackinac Island is led by juniors Woody Beardsley, Riley Chaffee, and Caleb Straight, sophomores Robert Chambers, Michael Gamble, and Tyler McLean, freshmen Paul Fisher and Thomas Rilenge, and eighth graders Andrew Chambers and Robert Chaffee.

The Class D district tournament is set for DeTour Tuesday, March 6, through Saturday, March 10, and will include the host Raiders, Mackinac Island, Cedarville, Pickford, and Brimley.
