Mission Point Offers Updated Workout Center

Two Cybex Arc Trainers, and treadmills, were added to Mission Point Resort's fitness center as part of a $30,000 refurbishing project. Mission Point Resort's upgraded exercise facility now offers fitness training, Pilates, or weight lifting with a monthly membership. The hotel has spent more than $30,000 updating its health club for guests, employees, residents, and even visitors staying at other hotels.

Activities Director Pat Driscoll arrived at the resort six years ago and knew right away that the health facility needed a new face.

"It was in dire need, with a lot of broken machines, and ones that would break down," she said.

The new workout facility officially opened August 5 with a free trial between August 17 and 23.

Two Cybex Arc Trainers, two Cybex treadmills, wood flooring for an aerobics area, new carpeting and rubber flooring, medicine and exercise balls, and a fresh coat of paint now go hand-in-hand with the stationary bicycles, dumbbells, wall-sized mirrors, weight machines, sauna, and locker rooms that the fitness center already had.

"Unfortunately, since we only had the one treadmill, [patrons] would come in, wouldn't be happy, and leave," she said. "Now, many of our guests use the facilities, and a majority of them are here first thing in the morning. Sometimes they are waiting out front before we are here at 7 a.m."

The hotel is eager to offer memberships to anyone who wants one.

Single memberships have a $25 initiation fee and cost $50 a month. Couples can join for $75. Locker rental is $8 a month. Members can bring guests for $6 and can use the outdoor pool and hot tubs from Monday through Thursday.

For those not able to make the trial period, Ms. Driscoll said, they can come in for $10, which is refunded if they join within three days.

There are special group rates, too, she said.

Ms. Driscoll has been encouraged by the patrons' enthusiasm, she said.

"It's like kids in a toy store," she said. "'It's great! New machines,' they say."

The fitness center is open every day until 10 p.m.
