Island Business Community To See Changes
New Ventures, Relocations Reported

Mackinac Island will benefit from several new businesses and relocations this summer.

Andrew Doud, owner of the new Doud's Market, formerly Doud Mercantile, at the corner of Fort and Main, is expected to open as early as Friday, April 27.

Vic Callewaert's new Starbucks coffee house, at the newly constructed building between May's Fudge and Patrick Sinclair's Irish Pub, is expected to open in mid-May, as construction of the interior continues.

Brad Chambers is the owner of a new gourmet deli and restaurant called The Sweet Life, in the former Pub Oyster Bar building on Main Street.

Cathy and Chris Szabo, owners of Freshwater Foods, have expanded the business to a second location on Main Street in the building that Martha's Sweet Shop occupied. They are also opening a factory and a third store in St. Ignace in the former Huron Landing restaurant, across from George's Body Shop. They expect to open the factory by May 1, while the store will open around May 7.

Freshwater Foods will offer deli sandwiches, deli meats and cheeses, desserts, doughnuts, muffins, and coffee. The Szabos are also close to securing a take-out beer and wine license for each store.

Martha's Sweet Shop, operated by the Tony Brodeur family, is relocated in the Horse Corral Mall on Main Street, where table seating will be available.

Loretta Spata's Mackinac Moccasins will move into the rear of the Horse Corral Mall. She will also open a new boutique, called Josie's Marketplace, next to Martha's new location.

Jason and Susanne Klonowski are the new owners of J.L. Beanery, a coffee house on the waterfront near the Island marina.

James Lazarowicz, who owns the Landing Gull and Weathervane Gifts on Market Street, is the new owner of Betty's Gifts, purchasing the Main Street business from Judy Bynoe.

Ken and LoriAnn Thompson will be taking over the operations of the Lilac House for Mr. Thompson's mother, Mary. The business is on Market Street.

Jack Landres, who owns Lilacs and Lace on Market Street, is renting the former Lasting Impressions house at the corner of Market Street and Cadotte Avenue for his new Victorian Summer Gallery.

Frank Bloswick is adding to his workspace at Mackinac Lapidary, in the Carrousel Shops, taking over the store which used to be occupied by James Lazarowicz's Northwinds.

Dr. Michael and Jane Bacon have purchased LaChance Cottage and are remodeling it. It will be added as an annex to their Harbour View Inn, both in the Mission.
