Mackinac Island Track Team Prepares for Regionals; Golfers To Compete

Robert Chambers sets a new Mackinac Island 400- meter dash record with a time of 58.5 seconds.

Coach Jeff Ferguson and his small but enthusiastic Mackinac Island Lakers track and field team are preparing for the regionals in Pickford Friday, May 18.

The top four qualifiers in each individual event will advance to the Upper Peninsula State Finals in Kingsford Saturday, June 2.

Competitors will be Woody Beardlsey in the shot put and middle distances, Robert Chambers in the 200- and 400- meter dashes, Jeff Roguska and Jesse Straight in the middle distances, Michi Mullings in the dashes and long jump, Morgan Brodeur-Bunker and Marie Bunker in the middle distances, Shelby Mosley and Shay Mosley in the dashes and field events, and Jane Finkel in the middle and long distances.

Shatters Record

Sophomore Robert Chambers dashed to a school record in the 400-meter event with a time of 58.5 at the Cedarville 9/10 meet at the Robert W. Smith Track Monday, May 14.

Bill Chambers established the previous mark of 59.9 in 1996.

Lakers Golf Team

The Lakers golf team, coached by Mary Patay, completed a tri-match with Cedarville and Pickford at the Les Cheneaux Club Tuesday, May 15, after play was suspended Monday, May 14.

Mackinac Island tallied a four-player team score of 203, while the host Trojans recorded 167 to win the match and the Panthers finished third with 209.

Paul Fisher has led the Lakers this season with an overall average of 41, and notched 46; Michael Gamble has averaged 47 and carded 44 for team low score; Woody Beardsley is averaging 56 and tallied 50, and Thomas Rilenge, who is scoring 57 for a season average, charted 52 at Cedarville.

Two female athletes, Maggie Chambers and Marie Bunker, are competing this season.

The Lakers boys golf team will compete in the Upper Peninsula Golf Finals scheduled for Gladstone Friday, June 1.
