Having grown up in the Kalamazoo area, Dr. Summer Liston was no stranger to occasional vacations on Mackinac Island. Now as part of the resident physician rotation program at the Mackinac Island Medical Center, Dr. Liston has the opportunity to study medicine on the Island.
"I always wanted to be a part of the Island more long term," she said. "Given the opportunity to come here, I was excited."
Dr. Liston began her rotation Sunday, June 3, and will conclude her stay June 17. She is joined by her two younger brothers and will be visited by her husband and parents prior to her departure.
After attending medical school at the University of Michigan, Dr. Liston began her residency in family medicine at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon.
"It's gorgeous and it's been a great opportunity to learn family medicine out there," she said.
She will conclude her work in Oregon July 1, and will continue her career in the Battle Creek area.
She credits Mackinac Island's remoteness and lifestyle as appealing factors to her and her family, and hopes to hone her skills in injuries and urgent care here.
