MICF Summer Concert Series Begins June 10

Summer concerts return this year, with eight Sunday programs scheduled in July and August and a special concert this weekend at Ste. Anne's Church.

"It's a chance to get exposed to more concert art music as opposed to the popular music you hear all the time," said Tess Miller, who organizes the Summer Concert Series with Melissa Straus. The program is also an opportunity for lesser known composers to gain exposure, she said.

All concerts are at the church, begin at 2 p.m., and are free to the public. They are sponsored by the Community Arts Committee of the Mackinac Island Community Foundation.

The Kalamazoo Strings, a youth ensemble, will make a special appearance as part of the Lilac Festival this Sunday, June 10, at 2 p.m.

July and August concerts are as follows:

July 1, Alex Graham & Co, a septet featuring new arrangements and compositions for jazz, led by Grand Hotel's music director.

July 8, Arcos Piano Trio, featuring classical compositions.

July 15: Folias, featuring tango and Latin folk music.

July 22: Roger Humphrey, performing Baroque music for flute and guitar.

July 29: Island resident Peggy Bynoe in a piano recital.

August 5: Island resident Heather May performing "Lookout: New Sounds in Classical Music."

August 12: A surprise concert.

August 19: Helix 7 ensemble returns with fresh ideas for chamber music.
