Students Recognized for Top MEAP Scores
By Eric Fish

Four elementary students on Mackinac Island, Amelia Roe, Kyle Shunk, Octavia Valencia, and Meadow Greenlee, are among top-10 performers on the standardized Michigan Educational Assessment Program, or MEAP test, in the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

The accomplishment came in the last academic year, when Mr. Shunk and Miss Greenlee were in fourth grade, Miss Roe in fifth, and Miss Valencia in third. Miss Valencia has since moved off the Island to the Kalamazoo area.

"I think there's a tremendous amount of pride that we can take in our kids and in our teachers," Superintendent Roger Schrock said. "They have succeeded and they continue to succeed. It is something we'd like to congratulate our students and teachers on."

The EUPISD district covers about 4,000 square miles and serves approximately 8,700 students. The high scorers were honored for their accomplishment with certificates.

"We have very devoted, dedicated students," he said. "Likewise, we have very good teachers who bring our students along so that they can perform in an outstanding fashion on all different types of standardized tests."

Attending a smaller school has advantages, he said.

"We have just limited numbers of students in each class, so the teachers do have the opportunity to work one-on-one with kids in many different ways," he said.

"She's just so great to raise," said Amelia's mother, Sandy Roe. "She listens, she's smart. She's just been a thrill to have as a daughter."

Miss Greenlee said she liked the questions and format of the MEAP test. She already has a special place picked out for her certificate.

"I'm going to put my certificate in a memory box that I do for things that are important and I want to have memories about," she said.
