While stone skippers gathered on the lakeshore of Windermere Point, children of all ages gathered on the grounds to participate in games and events hosted annually by the Mackinac Island Fire Department to celebrate the Fourth of July.
The fire department drove two fire engines to the event and distributed prizes and souvenirs to the children.
Children were invited to spray water from the fire hose and participated in the sack race, three-legged race, weeble wobble bat race, water balloon toss, and greased pole.
Adults even entered some of the games, especially the water balloon toss.
The most popular event was the greased pole, monitored by Bob Benser, which challenged children to climb a greasy wooden pole to grab money pinned to the top.
"The kids love it," Mr. Benser said.
Fire Department mascot, Safety Pup, also made an appearance and handed out plastic fire helmets to all the participating children.
