Parasailing Is Newest Island Attraction
By Eric Fish

Mackinaw Parasailing captain Jim Rizzardi pilots a boat out of the Mackinac Island Marina. His crews operate from Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, and St. Ignace.
Tourists flock to Mackinac Island every summer to enjoy scenic views and historic attractions, horses, and fudge in addition to an old-fashioned lifestyle. But for those looking for more of an adventurous tour than by horse or bicycle while enjoying their time on the Island, Mackinaw Parasailing can offer a more breathtaking service.

Mackinaw Parasailing operates from Memorial Day weekend through mid-September, and picks up from St. Ignace, Mackinaw City, and Mackinac Island. The business is open seven days a week, weather permitting.

Jim Rizzardi has been piloting a parasailing boat for the past nine summers. He and other captains must use a boat with a flat, extended stern to aid in takeoff and landings.

Once in the air, the customer is witness to birds-eye views of the Straits of Mackinac and surrounding areas for flights lasting up to 15 minutes.

"It's just like being outside of an airplane," said Brian Mendieta, a first-time parasailer from Pennsylvania. "You can just see the whole Island and the water looks like a little lake from way up there."

Customers have the option of flying solo or tandem, and also have the option of traveling either 300 feet or 600 feet through the sky. Mr. Mendieta sailed at 300 feet, but said he wished he would have gone higher.

Another first-time parasailer, Steve Einbinder of Syracuse, New York, sailed at 600 feet.

"It was a lot of fun," he said, noting the scenic views of the Island and the adrenaline rush of sailing through the sky.

People enjoying the ride is the reason why Mr. Rizzardi continues to drive boats in the business.

"It's just nice to see people on vacation coming out and just having fun," he said.

The service is available by appointment by calling (866) 436-7144.
