Visiting Doctors To Serve Island

Dr. Kari Young
Physicians Kari Young and Amanda Shoemaker are serving two-week residencies at the Mackinac Island Medical Center. Dr. Young arrived Sunday, July 22, and will leave Sunday, August 5. Dr. Shoemaker began her residency Sunday, July 29, and will conclude her stay Sunday, August 12.

Dr. Young has wanted to be a physician since childhood.

"I had a Fischer Price doctor bag," she remembered. "I'd be giving shots to all my stuffed animals."

Dr. Young's ambitions became a reality when she attended Michigan State University for undergraduate and medical school. She has one year remaining on a residency at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City and hopes to join a practice close to her hometown of Ludington.

Dr. Young visited Mackinac Island four years ago for a weekend vacation and applied for the Island residency through Munson Medical Center two years ago, hoping to gain practice in urgent care.

Her husband visited her last weekend.

"We basically saw the Island on our bikes, and we went to the fort and to several restaurants," she said. "It's just beautiful."

Dr. Amanda Shoemaker also received her medical training at Michigan State University.

She grew up in the Lansing area and is in the home stretch of a family medicine residency at Sparrow Hospital. She will complete the residency in six weeks and begin working at a Lansing area practice October 1.

Dr. Shoemaker's only previous visit to Mackinac Island was as a high school student participating in a weekend forensics tournament at Grand Hotel.

"We got to spend the weekend at the Grand Hotel," she noted. "That was fabulous, but we didn't get out and about very much at all."

This time around, she plans to enjoy the Island's ambiance with her husband, Ben, and two children, three-year-old Anna and two-month-old Matthew. So far, the family has biked around the Island, visited Fort Mackinac, and spent time in the downtown area.

"My daughter thinks this is the best place on Earth," Dr. Shoemaker said. "She likes to go for bike rides. She's currently obsessed with pirates, so canons and the boats, this is pirate heaven."

While at the medical center, Dr. Shoemaker hopes to boost her diagnostic confidence.
