Boats Needed for Straits Swim

Fifty swimmers will attempt to swim across the Straits of Mackinac from St. Ignace to Mackinaw City on Labor Day, Monday, September 3, during the Mackinac Bridge walk, in celebration of the bridge's 50th anniversary year. The event is coordinated by record-setting marathon swimmer Jim Dreyer.

Six power boats are needed to escort the swimmers across the Straits, and three power boats or sailboats are needed to tether dinghies that serve as stationary floating aid stations. Every boat captain must have one additional volunteer aboard to serve as a "lookout" and to serve nutrition. The time commitment for volunteers will be approximately from 5 a.m. until noon.

Anyone interested in volunteering their services for the event may contact Mr. Dreyer at (616) 878-1650.
