Monday evening, August 27, the moon was absolutely beautiful, with its beams shining down on the calm Straits of Mackinac. It was a magnificent sight for everyone who was taking an evening stroll on the boardwalk.
Grand Hotel will host the annual Labor Day Weekend Jazz Concert Friday, August 31, through Sunday, September 2. Come and enjoy the wonderful music. The Carlton Varney Antique weekend will be Friday, September 7, and Saturday, September 8. There will be many wonderful items to view.
Friends of the Mackinac Island Medical Center joined together Sunday, August 26, to support a most vital part of our community, where patients are treated daily by Dr. Don Weersing and his staff. The party, through the generosity of the Musser family, welcomed everyone to the Woodfill Center, where a delicious buffet dinner preceded the live auction with auctioneer and summer cottager David Levy, and Bob Tagatz of Grand Hotel, who enticed people with wonderful items. It's always a fun evening, where friends meet old friends after a busy summer. Winners of the raffles are as follows: Sandra and Debra Orr, 50/50; Jennifer and Frank Bloswick Jr., $5,000; Joe Cicala, $3,000, and Kathy Smith of Cheboygan, $2,000.

One of the most exciting items in the auction is a onenight stay in the Masco Cottage. Arnold Line provided a 10 p.m. boat to Mackinaw City so that many guests from the mainland could enjoy the event. It was a wonderful evening for a very important facility on Mackinac.
Seen enjoying the medical center fundraiser Sunday evening at Grand Hotel were Dr. Joe and Thelma Solomon from Kingsport, Tennessee, who are visiting family members in St. Ignace. Dr. Solomon was our Island doctor for more than 17 years, while Mrs. Solomon, a registered nurse, assisted him at the old Mackinac Island Medical Center. They're the parents of three daughters. The Solomons enjoyed meeting many old friends at the auction.
Adam and LeAndra Fisher of Saginaw Township, with their five-month-old son, Cullen, visited Barb and John Fisher and family over the weekend. Adam played in the Mark Gallagher Golf Tournament Saturday.
Vivian and Pat McTique of Troy and Mackinac enjoyed a three-week visit from their daughter and her family, Aimee and Tim McVady of Western Springs, Illinois, with their twoyear old daughter, Claire, and new daughter, Catherine Theresa, born June 7. The family had a wonderful time, especially Claire, who enjoyed riding "Molly," the pony at the 4-H barn.
Jamie Bynoe hosted a street hockey game at Great Turtle Park Saturday evening, August 25. Jamie's team, Red Wings, defeated Tony Brodeur's team, Boston Bruins, 18-6. Everyone had a great time.
Dan and Dorothy Hesslin of Manistee, longtime guests at the Windermere, were called home Sunday because Mrs. Hesslin's sister had suffered a broken hip. They hope to return in September to enjoy the fall colors.
Students returning to various colleges are Roxanne Pettit and Sam, Jill, and Kristi Kamphuis to Grand Valley State University, Blisse Beardsley to the University of Michigan, Tyler Finkel to Michigan State University, Josh Carley and Eric Cowell to Saginaw Valley State University, Emma Chambers to Ferris State University, Richard Chambers to Northern Michigan University, Lake Sweet to Albion College, Miranda McMahon to Aquinas College, and Scott Roguska to Grand Rapids Community College. Good luck to all of the students for a good year.
The Mackinac Island Public School will open Tuesday, September 4, and host a community picnic at noon. Come and join in the kickoff to a great school year for all of our students.

Congratulations to Ben and Louann Mosley on the adoption of three sons Friday, August 24, which was Grandma Lorma Kolatski's birthday. The boys and their ages are Albert Thomas Mosley, 5, Xavier Lee Mosley, 3, and Guyil Wayne Mosley, 2. They're joined at home by sisters Karlena, 17, Shay, 16, Shelbie, 15, and big brother Ben, 19. Lorma and the late Jim Kolatski are the grandparents of 23 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. Best wishes to the happy family from Island friends.
CBS News weather broadcast from the front porch of Grand Hotel Thursday, August 23, brought great publicity for the Island. It was wonderful to see the Mackinac Island cheerleaders on the air. They did a great job. Proud winner of the Caribbean cruise was Barb Fisher, secretary at the Mackinac Island Public School.
Mike and Mary (nee St. Onge) Cope of St. Ignace spent two nights at the Windermere Hotel Monday, August 27, and Tuesday, August 28. Mike and Mary celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary Tuesday, August 28, with a renewal of their vows at Ste. Anne's Church, with Father Rey Garcia officiating. They were joined by their three children, Jordan, Drew, and Michaela. Congratulations from Island friends and family.
Guests of Brian and Barbara Hellis over the weekend were Dan and Eileen Hruska and family.
Megan Weber and Brad Horn will celebrate their birthdays September 4. Happy birthday from Island friends.

Mark Chambers and his daughter, Clara, were the guests of Mark's sister and family, Nancy and Jean LaBorde, at their home in Crivitz, Wisconsin. Clara had a wonderful time at the county fair.
Margaret McIntire and her daughter, Marti, returned home Sunday from their visit to Cape Cod, where they visited Marti's son, Alex Winkel, who is studying to become a chef.
Winnie Chambers Clark of Chicago visited Mackinac over the weekend.
It was a great pleasure having my dear childhood friend, Jean Coyne, along with her daughter, Deanna, and son-in-law, Barry, of Oxford, visit us for several days. Jean enjoyed being on the Island once again, meeting old friends, sitting on the porch of the Windermere, and dining at the Carriage House. She also enjoyed a carriage ride to the cemetery, where her loved ones lie beneath the towering pines. Jean was raised by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Davis, and Aunt Florence, owners of the Davis Store. Their former home, on Cadotte Avenue, is now owned by Marvin May. It was on the Grand Hotel golf course that Jean met her beloved husband, Kennie Coyne of French Lick, Indiana. They spent many summers on Mackinac when they owned the former Webster Cottage at the Mission. Great memories.
The Fudge Festival hosted a jazz band on Windermere Point, Saturday, August 25, which was greatly enjoyed. The weather was perfect for an outdoor concert.
The Mackinac Island Cottagers Association celebrated its 45th anniversary with a delightful dinner at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club Friday, August 24, hosted by President Bill Porter. Guest speakers were Mayor Margaret Doud and Phil Porter, director of Mackinac Island State Park. It was a very enjoyable evening. Congratulations to Tom Lockwood, the new incoming president.
Sale signs are beginning to appear in many shops around town as the season of 2007 winds down.
We were fortunate to have a bit of rain, which was so badly needed as the grass everywhere needs moisture. Between the showers, the weather continues to be bright and sunny for all of the visitors to see the beauty of the Island.
The Andy McGreevy family of Petoskey spent a week at their home on Market Street.

The golf tournament held Thursday, August 23, for the Mackinac Island Medical Center and the Moses Dialysis Unit at Mackinac Straits Hospital was a great success. It was a perfect day, and the teams enjoyed playing at the Jewel, Woods, and Wawashkamo. It was very enjoyable, followed by a delicious buffet at the Woods Restaurant.
The yellow blooming lilies in the rustic boxes on the way to the Mackinac Island Medical Center are very attractive. The boxes were constructed by Dr. Don Weersing. The yellow lilies, donated to Ste. Anne's Catholic Church by Amelia Musser, are in full bloom.
The bad storms this past week in Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio were mentioned when I received a phone call from my good friend, Jennifer Karhoff, from Findlay, Ohio. The weather was reported on the national news. Jennifer's town was flooded, closing I-75, farmlands, the main street, and many businesses and homes. Jennifer helped many of her friends who had flooded basements. We've been lucky with the weather on Mackinac this summer.
The Mark Timmons family, who have spent the summer months at their East Bluff cottage, have returned to their home in Missoula, Montana. Anne Timmons is attending a conference in Japan.
The Rausch family, owners of the former Gunn Cottage in Hubbard's Annex, have returned to their home in Florida. We look forward to seeing them in the summer of 2008.
Sylvia Perault and her many volunteers are doing an excellent job, giving the many tourists who visit the historic Stuart House each day a fine history of the house and the area.
Jack Parel from Augusta, Georgia, has been visiting his brother, Larry, and other family members. He played in the Mark Gallagher Golf Tournament Saturday.
Dr. Fran and Lorna Straus hosted an open house at their Pontiac Lookout cottage Saturday afternoon, August 25. It was an enjoyable event.
The John Davey family from Bloomfield Hills are enjoying their East Bluff cottage. John is a nephew of the late Pat Davey.
Mikie Gallagher hosted a golf tournament Saturday, August 25, at Wawashkamo to benefit the Mark Gallagher Scholarship Fund at the Mackinac Island Community Foundation. The late Mark Gallagher was Mikie's nephew, and he was a fine young man. It was a beautiful day, and the golfers had a wonderful time.
A spaghetti dinner will be held Thursday, September 13, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Ste. Anne's Hall. Proceeds will go to Ste. Anne's Church. Come and enjoy a good dinner.
PJ, Tanya, and Hugo Pulte of Colorado are visiting the Pat Pulte family on Mackinac. Sunday morning, August 26, at Ste. Anne's Church, little Hugo received the Sacrament of Baptism with Father Rey Garcia officiating. Congratulations to the family from Island friends.
An e-mail received from Sara Bunker Sutherland told how happy she was to see Mackinac on the CBS Early Show, and especially to see her nephew, Anthony Rickley, on television. Sara misses the Island, and hopes to visit her family soon.
