Getting Ready

Less than a week before 75 Mackinac Island students open textbooks, teachers are moving about the school preparing classrooms and hall bulletin boards. Kindergarten and first grade teacher Vicki Urman puts the finishing touches on room decorations that will help teach reading to the young students. Leaf cutouts are marked with a number and its spelling and decorations made from colored construction paper that spell out the paper's color. The visual examples, she said, aid in the learning process.
