Geocaching Adventure Will Take Place Oct. 20 on Island

A fall geocaching adventure is planned for Saturday, October 20, on Mackinac Island, with more than 60 people expected to register for the free event.

The group will meet at 10:30 a.m. in the Great Room at Stonecliffe mansion before exploring the perimeter and interior of the island in search of strategically placed caches. The caches, which are found using handheld Global Positioning Systems (GPS), contain trinkets and notes.

The 33 Island caches will be discovered when geocachers enter coordinates into their GPS units, and then follow the navigational route. Coordinates are available on the international geocaching Web site, www.geocaching.com. Registration for the event also can be made at the site. Registered participants will receive a raffle ticket for a prize drawing to be held in the evening.

Geocachers are recommended to bring a bicycle or rent one on the Island, as the cache locations will require participants to travel several miles. The Cyclops geocaching group that has organized this event has an agreement with the Mackinac Island State Park to allow placement of the caches.
