Winter Transport Service Underway

A courtesy transportation program offered by the Mackinac Island Police Department is available for Island residents 60 years and older, disabled citizens, and those with special needs that cannot be accommodated by the horse-drawn taxi service.

The winter transportation program is for eligible passengers, while freight must be sent by horse-drawn dray.

Sick or injured people will be transported by ambulance.

Prior to participation, those meeting eligibility requirements for the service must sign a waiver that states the city and police department will not be held liable in the event of an accident. The form is available at the police department on Market Street.

With the understanding some transportation requirements may be last minute, police prefer residents make reservations at least an hour in advance. For weekend transportation, a call by 5 p.m. Friday is requested at (906) 847-3300.

The Mackinac Island Service Company offers horsedrawn taxi and dray service. Reservations must be made by 4 p.m. for taxi service after 5 p.m. or the following morning. For reservations, phone (906) 847-3323.
