Louina 'Aunt Lou' Riley

By Jeannette Doud

Louina Riley Louina Riley There are those whose lives remind us of the sunset's warming glow. They leave a touch of glory lingering after when they go.

Mackinac mourns the loss of our dear friend, Louina "Aunt Lou" Orr Riley, who passed away Monday, March 17, in Hendersonville, North Carolina, at the age of 95.

She was born March 31, 1913, in Caro, to the late Dr. Louis and Viola Orr.

Aunt Lou's love for the Island dates back many years, when her late brother, Dr. Rex and Betty Orr, worked on Mackinac. She would come each summer to visit her nieces, Debra, Sandra, and Marsha Orr. Aunt Lou would help the girls with their garden, loved to play bridge with her many friends on the Island, and made many homemade pies and jam. Last fall, she knitted a baby outfit for little Grace Crowley. Aunt Lou loved Christmas, and won many awards for her decorating. She was full of fun, and we had many wonderful conversations about Mackinac and the Orr family. She loved most the simple things that filled her heart with rich content.

In the spring, Aunt Lou will be laid to rest next to her late husband, John Riley, in Caro. She is survived by her two daughters, Marilyn Riley and Carolyn Haffner of Hendersonville, North Carolina; the Rex Orr family; Keith Riley family; William Fitzgerald family, and the Bob Nowland family.

At a sunny window in our home is a beautiful African violet covered with purple blossoms, a gift from Aunt Lou to me, a precious reminder of my dear friend.

Cards may be sent to Marilyn Riley and Carolyn Haffner at the following address: 1604 Sherman Drive, Hendersonville, NC 28739.

Donations may be made to: Elizabeth House, a hospice facility, Greatrex Place, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731.

In memory of Aunt Lou:

I'd like to leave but daffodils to mark my little way,

To leave but tulips red and white behind me as I stray;

I'd like to pass away from earth and feel I'd left behind,

But roses and forget-menots for all who come to find.

Deepest sympathy to the family from Island friends.
