Lightning Strikes White Pine at Island's Ste. Anne's Cemetery

Assistant City Foreman Mike Lee takes a chainsaw to one of the cemetery's white pine trees (top photo) that was struck by lightning during a string of thunderstorms Sunday night, May 25. It will take more than a day to remove the tree and assess the damage, Mr. Lee said. The tree's fall broke a stone bench in the cemetery and knocked numerous veterans' markers off headstones; no graves themselves were harmed. "People told me they could hear the tree falling from all the way in the village," Mr. Lee said, referring to the community of Harrisonville, more than 1,000 feet through the woods. "It's a pretty impressive sight."
