Physician Rotations Announced at Island Medical Center

By Caitlyn Kienitz

New faces rotate in and out of the Mackinac Island Medical Center every summer, as physicians complete rural rotations as part of their residency programs. The program allows new doctors to gain urgent care and emergency room experience in a setting other than their own family practice programs.

Karen Miljour, who serves as the Island's full-time physician, said the resident physicians play a big role in the daily functions of the medical center, allowing the center to function in a more timely manner during busy summer months.

"If there was just the physician here, some of these days would be extremely hectic," said Dr. Miljour. "It would be difficult to take care of all the patients they see."

Physicians from throughout Michigan come to the Island for two weeks at a time and alternate 24-hour-long shifts. Two residents are on the Island at a time.

Closing out the month of June, Bernard Pulido of Lansing's Sparrow Hospital finishes his Island rotation June 29. He will be replaced by Emily Andrina, also of Sparrow Hospital, who will depart July 13. Sparrow's Brad Kloska arrived June 22 and will depart July 6.

Physicians arriving in July include Jon Copeland of Royal Oak's William Beaumont Hospital from July 6 through 20, Sally Chu of Traverse City's Munson Hospital from July 13 through 27, Ekram Smith of Wayne's Annapolis Hospital from July 20 to August 2, and Brooke Lemmen of Sparrow from July 27 to August 10.

August arrivals include Carolyn Ebert of William Beaumont from August 3 through 17, Janis Samantha Recto of Sparrow from August 10 through 24, Sally Chu of Munson who will return for a second rotation August 17 through 31, and Jemellee Jacala Tadian of Annapolis from August 24 to September 7.

September residents include John Sharma of William Beaumont from September 1 through 14, Molly Craven from September 7 through 21, Jobin Varughese of William Beaumont from September 14 through 28, Kelly Freberg Ash of the Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies from September 21 to October 5, and Jamie Broekhuizen of the Kalamazoo Center from September 28 to October 12.

Finally, two residents will arrive in October. They are David Bayley of the Kalamazoo Center, who will be on the Island from October 5 until October 19, and Tracy Brady of Munson, who will arrive October 12 and depart October 26.
