Wawashkamo Golf Course Hosts Three-day Tourney

A three-day men's golfing tournament at Wawashkamo Golf Course June 26 through June 28 drew 32 golfers in 16 teams of two. The competition was for club members and guests.

Play began Thursday with a practice round and a Best Ball with Handicap event. The team of Doug Rearick and Mike Konicki and the team of Ron Dufina and Tony Ingersoll tied for first place with a score of 63.

Two teams, including the team of Gary Cousino and Mark Laramie, and the team of Larry Berke and Mike Bartlett, tied for third place with a score of 64.

Friday and Saturday's competition had winners in two flights. First flight winners included the first place team of Rusty Preston and Sean Preston with a score of 161.4, the second place team of Mr. Rearick and Mr. Konicki with a score of 173, and the third place team of David Levy and Rick Quiton with a score of 182.3.

Second flight winners included the first place team of Mr. Berke and Mr. Bartlett with a score of 180.4, the second place team of Al Arbib and Lee Finkel with a score of 187.3, and the third place team of Alan Wisne and Dean McInnes with a score of 187.9.

The two flight winners played off from the ninth hole. The overall winners were the father and son team of Rusty and Sean Preston.

In Thursday's games on the course, the closest club member to pin four was John Manikoff, while Mr. Konicki was the closest guest. At pin 17, Mr. Levy was the closest member and Mr. Bartlett was the closest guest. Bob Andress had the longest putt on hole nine, and Mr. Rearick had the longest drive on hole five.

During Friday's games on the course, Rusty Preston was the member closest to pin four, while Mr. Laramie was the closest guest. The closest guest to pin 17 was Jim Coady. The closest team to pin nine in three shots was the team of Mr. Wisne and Mr. McInnis. Mr. Wisne scored an eagle on the hole.

In Saturday's games on the course, Mr. Cousino was the member closest to pin four, while Sean Preston was the closest guest. At pin 17, Rusty Preston was the closest member and Mr. McInnes was the closest guest. Mr. Finkel had the longest putt on hole nine.

An awards banquet was held at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club following the tournament, where pro shop credit was given as prizes.
