POLICE REPORTS

Reports from the Mackinac Island Police Department from June 24 to July 1:

A gift shop on Main Street reported the theft of $2,400 in merchandise from a display case at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, June 24. The stolen items included a wooden basket with clasps and hinges made of ivory, and three smaller baskets and miscellaneous items inside. None of the employees saw the theft.

An Island employee said $112 was stolen from his bag while visiting friends at an apartment on Main Street at 2:25 p.m. Wednesday, June 25.

A carriage driver was verbally warned by police after making an illegal U-turn at Main and Fort streets at 12:50 a.m. Friday, June 27. The driver said he thought he was allowed to make U-turns at Marquette Park and at the other end of Main Street near Windermere Point, but city ordinance prohibits U-turns on the Island. Carriage drivers who need to turn around are asked to use the circular driveway at Arnold Line.

The U.S. Coast Guard was contacted by police after an unmanned six-foot boat went adrift and headed into channel waters at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 29. The man who reported the incident to police said he thought someone may have untied the rope or it may have broken away from its mooring. The boat washed up on Round Island. It had no registration numbers on its hull.

A deli and a bicycle shop on Main Street were ticketed Sunday, June 29, for violating the ban of free-standing signs. An amendment to the city's sign ordinance makes placing a sign too close to the sidewalk a civil infraction.

A Main Street retail store was ticketed for hanging products, two windsocks, in the doorway Thursday, June 26. The owner has been warned several times in the past that this is an ordinance violation, police noted. Displays hung on doorways are a fire safety hazard.

Police reported 16 bicycle larcenies, one bicycle accident, cited three minors for illegal possession of alcohol, responded to one false fire alarm, and assisted local emergency response teams four times.
