Parks Report Attendance Surge at Mill Creek
      Since the opening of its newest features in June, historic Mill Creek Discovery Park near Mackinaw City has increased its attendance close to 20%, a great achievement considering attendance at Mackinac State Historic Parks is down 5% overall, director Phil Porter told the Mackinac Island State Park Commission at its meeting Friday, July 25, at Fort Mackinac.

August 5 Primary Election Will Require Voting Along Party Lines
      When 9,483 registered voters head to one of 14 precincts in Mackinac County to cast their ballots in the Tuesday, August 5 primary election, they will be voting along party lines, as required by state law.

Three Rescued From Stray Boat
      Three divers in the Straits of Mackinac, were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard from Station St. Ignace at 10:20 a.m. Sunday, July 27, after their boat strayed while they were diving.

Police Reports
      The following reports are from the Mackinac Island Police Department from July 23 to July 29: A man sustained minor injuries after falling out of a rented "drive yourself" carriage on Cadotte Avenue at 4:20 p.m. Saturday, July 26. Four family members in the carriage were unharmed, and no damages to the carriage or property were reported.

      On page 12 of the July 26 to August 1 issue of Mackinac Island Town Crier, it stated that Bill Martin was the president of the University of Michigan, which is incorrect. He is, in fact, the athletic director of the university.

      New York designer Nina McLemore will showcase her Fall 2008 collection in Marlee's Gallery at Grand Hotel, from Friday, August 8, to Sunday, August 10. The trunk show will be open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Mackinac Island Community Foundation.

Mackinac Island School Board Sets Budget, Welcomes Bean as Trustee
      The Mackinac Island Public School Board of Education's meeting Thursday, July 24, served as its annual organizational meeting, as the board approved its budget, swore in a new member, and elected officers. Kelly Bean was sworn in for her first term on the school board, replacing Patricia Martin, who left the board after serving for eight years.

Bat Conservancy Group To Offer Program at Island Library August 6
      Mackinac Island Public Library has invited the Organization for Bat Conservation to present its "Bats of the World" program Wednesday, August 6, as part of the library's summer reading program. Members of the organization, which is based at the Cranbrook Institute of Science in Bloomfield Hills, will discuss sound waves, ecosystems, food webs, and conservation.
