Two in Cruising Class Finish Race

Bequia, Unknown Lady Arrival Ends Chicago Event

Of the 434 boats that began the 100th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Saturday, July 19, 44 retired, owing to light winds that carried on the race too long or because of mechanical or equipment problems.

Bequia, a Cruising 2 class boat owned by Robert Sperl of Itasca, Illinois, was the second to-last boat to reach the finish line at the Island after a 333-nautical-mile journey, at 7:49 a.m., Wednesday, July 23. Total elapsed time for the Bequia was 93 hours, 49 minutes, and 18 seconds.

Finishing shortly after that was Unknown Lady, owned by David Ward of Chicago. The yacht club did not have an official finishing time posted for Unknown Lady, also in the Cruising 2 class, as of Monday, July 28, said Christie Kirchner of the yacht club.

Race results for top finishers were published in the Mackinac Island Town Crier July 26.
