(Photograph courtesy of Don Eckhardt) The annual evening carriage rally will be Wednesday, August 13, under a new format. Carriage drivers will meet at Fort Mackinac's Avenue of Flags at 6:30 p.m., where they will be given a map with targeted destinations and questions about Mackinac Island's history and geological features that can be answered along the route.

The drive will be 35 to 40 minutes, with each carriage to begin at five minute intervals so those in back can avoid any trailing dust from carriages ahead of them.

The rally is being organized this year by Don and Lisa Eckhardt, carriage driving and horse riding instructors, respectively, and employees of Randy and Michelle Stuck on the West Bluff.

The Eckhardts expect about 10 people to participate in this year's event, and participants can enjoy some driving practice on the Scout Barracks grounds before the rally.

"This is a chance for carriage drivers to enjoy what they have together," said Mr. Eckhardt. "It will also give visitors a chance to see the local carriages on the road."

To join in the rally, carriage drivers should call the Eckhardts at 847-4061. There is no registration fee.
