Late Night Noise Spoils Island Visit

To the Editor

My wife and I honeymooned on the Island 21 years ago and have returned numerous times since to celebrate our anniversary. We just returned home from the Island, where we spent both Friday and Saturday night (August 1 and 2). I felt like we had stayed at a hotel located on the main street of a college town where drunks rule the early morning hours. My wife and I were awakened from our sleep at least three times each night between the hours of 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. by foul-mouthed yelling bar patrons returning to their homes or hotels. We have never experienced anything like this when staying on the Island before.

Is there a noise ordinance on the Island? If there is, where in the world are the Mackinac Island Police or the State Police? I would like someone to explain to me why anyone would pay nearly $1,000 for two nights at a hotel only to be repeatedly roused from your sleep by drunken individuals yelling four letter words?

Why is the police department not maintaining a peaceful environment? It will be a long time before my wife and I return to the Island. S. McDonald Okemos
