Festival To Celebrate Island's Signature Sweet

Mackinac Island fudge will be the star of the show during the fourth annual Mackinac Island Fudge Festival, which will begin Thursday, August 21. The festival, which continues through Saturday, August 23, is meant to be a familyfriendly affair to close out the summer.

The festival will be headlined by two performances of the Children's Ballet Theatre of Michigan at Mission Point Theatre. The ballet troupe will perform Friday, August 22, and Saturday, August 23, at 8 p.m. Both performances are free to the public.

Festivities begin Thursday with a Mackinac Island hayride, which departs the tourism bureau office at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults and $12 for children, and reservations are suggested.

Thursday night will also feature a "Dining Under the Influence" event at Mary's Bistro starting at 7 p.m., with a special menu influenced by Ryba's fudge. Later in the weekend, the Pink Pony and Chippewa Hotel will present "Brunch Under the Influence" Saturday at 9 a.m., a similar event involving Joann's and Murdicks.

Bars and restaurants around the Island will create fudgeinspired drinks Friday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the "Fudge on the Rocks" event.

Saturday afternoon will feature activities at Windermere Point, including the Great Kite Ascension at 2 p.m. and Art in the Park: A Photographer's Exhibition, beginning at 4 p.m.

This year's fudge festival will again include the Golden Ticket contest, inspired by "Willa Wonka and the Chocolate Factory." Golden tickets will be hidden in boxes of Island fudge, and those who find a golden ticket will receive a Mackinac Island vacation package.
