Mackinac Island's youngsters participated in the "Sporties for Shorties" program from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, August 11, to Wednesday, August 13, at Mackinac Island Public School.

The program, designed for children from age three to five, was created by Mike Devlin of Meridian Township Parks and Recreation in Okemos.

Mr. Devlin, a graduate of Central Michigan University, has developed many programs for young children and teens, coached middle school basketball in Haslett, and coordinated the day-to-day activities of more than 120 sports teams in the Lansing area.

Children learned the basics of T-ball, soccer, and track and field through a series of simple drills designed to improve their sports and motor skills.
