Police Reports

Reports from the Mackinac Island Police Department, August 12 to August 19:

A man reported $300 missing from his wallet at 4 p.m. Friday, August 15. He said two female acquaintances showed up at his house the night before and he allowed them to sleep there, as they had no other place to stay. The next morning, he said, the money was missing from his wallet. When he asked the acquaintances to return the stolen money, they sent him text messages saying it was a loan. The women said the man had loaned them money in the past. The man's wife accused the women of coming to the Island and sleeping with men for money, boat tickets, and other items.

Six people riding on a dray through Ste. Anne's cemetery at 9:40 p.m., Thursday, August 14, were verbally warned by police after it was discovered they were drinking on the wagon. Police found open containers of alcohol, which is considered an open intoxicant, and informed their employer of the incident.

A woman fell out of a carriage and the horse stepped on her left knee Wednesday, August 13. She was transferred to the Mackinac Island Medical Center for treatment and released.

Police found a dog believed to be a golden retriever and German shepherd mix at 5 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, at Windermere Point, wearing a Mickey Mouse collar and a red bandana. He was held at the Police Station until the owner was found.

A man was charged with a civil infraction, a $110 fine, for riding a stolen bike at 10:10 a.m. Thursday, August 14. An observer reported that he recognized the bike as belonging to an Island employee, and when police ran the bicycle's license through their records, they discovered it did belong to the employee. The man said a friend loaned him the bike and he did not know it was stolen.

Police warned a man to stop sending harassing text messages to his ex-girlfriend after she complained at 9:20 p.m. Thursday, August 14. He had moved out of their shared apartment. Police said this would be his only warning to stop texting her.

A man turned in a counterfeit $20 bill to a bank at 2:25 p.m. Monday, August 18. The bill will be transferred to the bank's main branch on the mainland.

Police reported 16 bicycle larcenies, four bike accidents, cited two minors for illegal possession of alcohol, responded to one false fire alarm, and assisted local emergency response teams three times.
