Marsalis, Brubeck Headline Grand Hotel's Jazz Weekend

Grand Hotel's annual Labor Day Weekend Jazz Concert will begin Friday, August 29, and continue through Monday, September 1. The weekend will feature headliners Branford Marsalis and Dave Brubeck.

Mr. Marsalis, who will perform in Saturday's Jazz Concerts and Cookout in the hotel's Tea Garden, is a three-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist with a wide range of musical interests, including performing, composing, and producing. Born in New Orleans, he has amassed experience playing with Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock, and spending two years as the musical director of "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno.

Claudia Acuna and Joey Calderazzo will open for Mr. Marsalis. Tickets cost $65 and include a picnic lunch.

Mr. Brubeck has been a jazz pianist since the early 1950s, and has composed a number of jazz classics in the past few decades. Mr. Brubeck's constant experiments with time signatures and his tendency to stray from the standard four beats per measure have set him apart from other jazz musicians of the same era.

Mr. Brubeck will perform at Sunday's Jazz Concerts and Cookout, with Mackinac's own Alex Graham and the Grand Hotel Orchestra opening. Tickets cost $65.

Another Mackinac Island mainstay, John Boutte, will return to the Island from New Orleans to play at the Grand Stand Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Sunday at 9:45 a.m., gospel singer Betty Johnson will perform on the East Front Porch at Grand Hotel. Ms. Johnson began her career with her family, the Johnson Family Singers, but also met with substantial success as a solo singer. This is the fourth year for the Gospel Program's inclusion in Jazz Weekend.
