Daisy Days Raises $700 for Scholarship

A total of $700 was raised to support the Stella King Scholarship Fund for qualified graduates of Mackinac Island Public School during this year's Daisy Days fundraiser at the Post Office Wednesday, August 20.

The late Stella King was Mackinac's lay health nurse years ago, providing prenatal, child, and general wellness programs to an isolated winter community. She used the summer seasons to raise money needed for her clinics. One of those fundraisers was Daisy Day.

The lay health programs once guided by Miss King are now carried out by the staff at Mackinac Island Medical Center, however, the Daisy Day fundraiser now supports high school graduates seeking postsecondary education.

The Daisy Day fundraiser tradition was taken over by Island residents Barb Fisher and Candi Smith.

The event offered a raffle. Winners are as follows:

50/50 drawing ($293) - Mike Bradley; DVD player - Collin Armstrong; Black horse Webkin - Lakelyn Bunker; Bird feeder - Mark "Beau" Bielinski; Doll - Loretta Clark; Singing duck - Carrie Kaminen; Flashlight - Eunice White; Jelly Belly Beans and holder - Gwen Bagbey; Mackinac Island calendar - Elaine Bunker; Tea kit - Annette Gillespie; Beanie Bears - Allison Simmons
