Grand Hotel Hosts Antique and Design Festival This Weekend

The annual Carleton Varney Antique and Design Fall Festival will take place this weekend at Grand Hotel. The festival will begin Friday, September 5, with a Gala Preview Party, and continue throughout the day Saturday, September 6, and Sunday, September 7.

The Gala Preview Party from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday will give those interested the chance to get an early look at the items in the show, while also benefiting the Mackinac Island Community Foundation's fund for the Mackinac Island Public Library. Tickets for the gala, available at Grand Hotel's front desk ahead of time, and in the art gallery Friday night, cost $35, and all proceeds will be given to the library's fund. The gala will also feature an open bar.

This year's festival will feature an assortment of dealers, most of whom hail from the Midwest, said Holly Nitzschke, event organizer at Grand Hotel. The dealers will present a wide range of items including china, furniture, jewelry, and American Indian art. All items at the show were produced prior to 1950.

On Saturday and Sunday, entrance is free. The show will open at 10 a.m. both days, continuing until 4:30 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Saturday will also feature two lecturers on home design, Margot Shaw, founder of Flower Magazine, at 9 a.m. in the Terrace Room, and Carleton Varney at 3:15 p.m. in the parlor.
