Island Health Fair Takes Place Saturday

A health fair will be offered on Mackinac Island Saturday, September 6. Dr. Ann Silverman and Dr. Robert Spitzer will host "Healthy: A Fair" at Community Hall from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will focus on good health.

A Children's Corner will encourage Island children to maintain their health and to practice safe bicycling habits, and physicians will discuss a variety of health issues.

Those who attend will receive free bicycle helmets, while supplies last.

Admission to the event and all lectures is free.

The event is sponsored by the Mackinac Island Tourism Bureau and its newly formed nonprofit arm, Great Turtle Festivals. Proceeds from pharmaceutical companies who contribute to the fair will benefit the Mackinac Island Medical Center.

Presentation Schedule • 11 a.m - Smoking Cessation, Dr. Michael Bacon, D.O., family practice physician at Little Traverse Primary Care and Northern Michigan Hospital.

• 11:30 a.m. - Celiac Disease: Triggers and Genetics, Dr. Ann L. Silverman, M.D., Gastroenterology section chief and director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center with Henry Ford Health System.

• 12 p.m. - Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia, Dr. Robert Spitzer, M.D., neurologist from Royal Oak and Southfield.

• 12:30 p.m. - Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, Dr. Abraham Thomas, division chief of Endocrinology with Henry Ford Health System.

• 1 p.m. - Head Trauma, Marilyn Gates, M.D., senior staff physician, Department of Neurosurgery, Henry Ford Hospital.

• 1:30 p.m. - Headaches and Migraines: How to Cope, Dr. Robert Spitzer.

• 2 p.m. - Hypertension, Dr. Karen Miljour, D.O., family practice physician at Mackinac Island Medical Center.

• 2:30 p.m. - Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Dr. Ann Silverman.

• 3 p.m. - Sports and Exercise, Mary Patay, certified personal trainer with a doctorate in physical education, and Mackinac Island Public School volleyball coach.
