Richard Waite Is School's New Science Teacher

Richard Waite Richard Waite Mackinac Island's high school students will see a new face in the classroom this year, as Richard Waite of Cheboygan takes over the post of high school science teacher.

This year's curriculum for Mackinac Island students will include physics, physical science, earth science, health, and applied science, Mr. Waite said. In addition, he will teach an enrichment class for elementary students to help build basic computer skills.

Mr. Waite said he looks forward to working with the small classes on the Island, as well as doing a variety of laboratory exercises to keep the students engaged.

"I'm looking forward to the small classes," he said. "You're definitely able to get a better idea of what the students' needs are, tailor to their interests, and give help where it's needed."

Mr. Waite, a graduate of the University of Michigan and Northern Illinois University, has been teaching for 11 years. He most recently taught in Mackinaw City. He moved to Michigan with his wife, Rose, five years ago, after living and teaching in Illinois.

The Waites have two children, Garrett, 4, and Jessica, 12, who both attend school in Cheboygan.
