Fly Control Effort Was Successful This Year To the Editor: Seasons come, and seasons go. Success on Mackinac is often measured by the rulers of fudge sales, bicycle rentals, and ferry boat traffic. Rarely does an insect, such as the lowly fly, ever make frontpage news. This year it did. Congratulations, Town Crier, on bringing this matter to the foreground. But perhaps the most appreciation should go to the following: Dr. Al Sibinic, for his perseverance in dealing with this pesky problem, the Fly Control Committee (comprised of City Council members), Mayor Doud, and Mackinac Island Carriage Tours. All of you were proactive in working together to try for a solution this season. Together, you were not only progressive, but you actually adhered to a program. Guess what? It's working. In the decades of horse ownership on Mackinac, just one season, 2008, stands out as a winner in the battle between biting flies and horses. This year the predator wasp campaign zeroed in on the flies, for a change. It has been one of the best "little" things to happen here in a long time. That, in my book, spells "achievement."
