Dismayed About Coffee Shop
To the Editor:

My husband and I have been coming to Mackinac Island and staying on the Island for many years. One of the many charms of the Island is that it has never been a typical tourist-type place. We come there in order to get away from the regular commercialism of modern life.

We are subscribers of the Town Crier so that we can keep up with Island happenings in the off season. Therefore, we were dismayed and very unhappy when we read that a Starbucks was going to open on Main Street. We were even more dismayed when we came in September and saw it.

This is a chain coffee shop. There are other places to get a good cup of coffee on the Island. We don't understand why town planners, who argued whether the Post Office could put up a plastic picket fence, would allow a Starbucks. Our fear is, can the McDonalds golden arches be far behind?

If this is a new policy, please re-think it.
