Yacht Race Essay Contest Underway

An essay contest is open to everyone who has sailed in Chicago Yacht Club's 333-mile Race to Mackinac. There have been 99 races since the classic began in 1898, and the contest, entitled Mackinac Memories, will commemorate the 100th sailing in July.

The Race to Mackinac is the longest annual freshwater distance sailing race.

Entries can be up to 2,000 words and should describe how the race has influenced the participant. Essays will be judged on originality and their ability to capture the spirit of the race.

The winner's essay will be published in the 2008 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac program and the author will receive a $500 Lands' End gift card. The second place winner will receive a $250 gift card and the third place winner will receive a $100 gift card.

"The Mackinac Memories essay contest is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the race and reflect on its rich tradition, especially during this special year," said David Mc- Creight, president of race sponsor Lands' End, which is sponsoring the contest with Chicago Yacht Club.

Entry deadline is April 15 and can be submitted by e-mail or the post office. The e-mail address is communications @chicagoyachtclub.org, and Mackinac Memories Essay Contest should appear in the subject line. The physical address is Chicago Yacht Club, 400 E. Monroe Street, Chicago, IL 60603.
