NEWS ABOUT PEOPLE ON MACKINAC ISLAND

Cheers! Summer is here. The warm, bright days have arrived on Mackinac, making it more beautiful than ever. Traffic has increased on the ferry lines, and visitors can be seen taking the scenic buggy ride with the fringe on top, bicycling around the lakeshore, where wildflowers grow in an array of colors, or walking on many of the wooded trails. You might even find some wild strawberries.

Congratulations to Carl McCready Jr. of Sault Ste. Marie, who was recently named principal of Sault Ste. Marie High School. Carl has worked many summers for Arnold Transit Company. He is the grandson of Marilyn Mc- Cready and the late Rollie McCready of Cheboygan. Best wishes from Island friends.

Happy 50th birthday to Marti McIntire July 2. A family celebration was held in her honor.

Walking down French Lane, one will see beauty in the gardens. On the left, at the former Hildreth home, now owned by Jennifer Karhoff of Findlay, Ohio, is the most beautiful yellow rosebush in full bloom. It is truly my favorite. This blooms every year around this time of year. It's a very old bush, dating back to the King family, whose late daughter, Stella King, R.N., was the Island's health nurse for many years. Needless to say, I look forward to seeing such beauty each year. Stella's niece, Phyllis Dunham, spends each summer at her cottage on French Lane. On the right side of the lane, you will see Dwight LaPine's work of art in his beautiful garden, now in full bloom. There are flowers of many varieties. It is truly a showplace. The interesting fact in Dwight's garden is that he grinds up many of the plants in late fall, and others he grows in his warm basement throughout the long winter months. Also in front of Dwight and Jeff Shaffer's home on Market Street is a beautiful variegated lilac tree, which is admired daily by folks passing by.

Sharing a ride in a 35th anniversary edition of the Ford Mustang convertible are Mackinac Island Mayor Margaret Doud and St. Ignace Mayor Paul Grondin. He took hot dogs back to his brother, Gary, who is also a patient at the Mackinac Straits Hospital Long Term Care facility in St. Ignace.
