Recreation Department To Offer Sports Camps

The Mackinac Island Recreation Department will offer two children's sports programs in August.

Youth basketball camp will begin Monday, August 11. The three-day camp is from 9 a.m. to noon in the Mackinac Island Public School gymnasium, and costs $75 for all three days, or $25 per day. Mackinac Island students may attend at $50 for three days or $20 per day.

Mike Devlin, of Meridian Township Parks and Recreation in Okemos, will coach the camp. Mr. Devlin, a graduate of Central Michigan University, has developed many special programs for young children and teens, coached middle school basketball in Haslett, and coordinated the dayto day activities of more than 120 sports teams in the Lansing area.

Mr. Devlin also created the "Sporties for Shorties" program, a class that encourages parents of children ages three to five to participate with their children. The class is offered on the same days as basketball camp, and will be held outside the school, weather permitting, from noon to 1 p.m. Besides the development of large motor skills, Mr. Devlin will teach the basics of T-ball, soccer, track and field, and other sports. Cost is $10 per day.
