David Rowe Is Commodore of Yacht Club

David Rowe
David Rowe, a 26-year member of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club, will take the helm as club commodore Sunday, August 31, relieving Commodore Jack Keck in a change of watch ceremony that will begin at 1 p.m.

Mr. Rowe, originally from Flushing, joined the club in 1982 and, over the past four years, has served as club secretary, treasurer, rear commodore, and vice commodore, a requirement to be eligible for the one-year term as commodore.

The commodore is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the club and works with club manager Tim McCleery to ensure the club and food service meet member expectations.

Mr. Rowe, owner of the boat Wild Honey, said he is looking forward to fulfilling the post for the next year.

"We have a tremendous staff and the club is more popular than ever," he said.

There are 300 members in the Yacht Club, from Detroit, Chicago, Florida, California, and many more from the east coast.

Mr. Rowe also said there are 159 more on the waiting list.

"Having that many people on the waiting list really points out the club's popularity," he said.

In the next year, the clubhouse, which was built in 1880, will undergo many interior upgrades, said Mr. Rowe.

"The clubhouse does need some upgrading, but the clubhouse and the grounds never looked better," Mr. Rowe said. "We have a tremendous amount of support from our members and staff."

The Mackinac Island Yacht Club was formed in 1937. The clubhouse is the former cottage of George Sweeney and is on land leased from the Mackinac Island State Park Commission.

The clubhouse fell in disrepair during the 1940s and 1950s, when the club was growing steadily, and in 1955, Bill Doyle was elected commodore and undertook restoration of the house and adding a burgee room on the east side of the original building.

The clubhouse was expanded again in 1985 when the burgee room was enlarged to a dining room and two more sleeping rooms were added on the second floor.

The club now offers seven sleeping rooms for rent to members and hosts dinners each Thursday evening during the summer.
