Zuhdi Jasser To Speak at Islamic Forum
The head of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy will speak on Mackinac Island Friday, August 29, at the Trinity Church rectory on Fort Street. Zuhdi Jasser has been invited to lead a public discussion on Islamic fundamentalism by the Jewish congregation of Mackinac Island, Kehilat Hatzav Hagadol, and will speak at 8:15 p.m., following Sabbath services, which begin at 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Jasser is a practicing physician in Arizona, served as a U.S. Navy commander, and is a devout Muslim.

"We invite everyone to hear first hand what Dr. Jasser has to say about Islamic fundamentalism," said Dr. Robert Spitzer, one of the congregation's officers and Dr. Jasser's host for the weekend. "We will be posing some tough questions about the Koran. For those who wish an inside look at these major issues affecting the world today, this will represent a unique opportunity."

The American Islamic Forum for Democracy is devoted to public education about the compatibility of Islam with the founding principles of the United States. Among other things, the group believes that the Koran, which is Islam's main reference, promotes tolerance, does not justify terrorism, establishes equality among the sexes, and permits separation of church and state.
