Labor Day Regatta Will Be August 31

The 14th annual Horn's Bar Labor Day Regatta, the last of a series of boat races at Mackinac Island this summer, will be Sunday, August 31.

A skippers' meeting will take place at 1:45 p.m. at Mackinac Island Yacht Club that day. The race will begin in intervals near the east breakwall, starting at 2:30 p.m.

Race coordinator and competitor David Rowe is expecting up to 15 boats for the race, including last year's winners, Vern May of Charlevoix and Chuck Thompson of Midland in the boat Challenge.

The winner will be awarded the Labor Day Regatta trophy and each participant will be given an engraved plaque during an awards ceremony at the Yacht Club after the race.

The race, in which boats will take about two hours to complete one lap around the Island, is open to all boats of any kind. Every boat will be given a Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) handicap, said Mr. Rowe.

"This is an opportunity to have a wide class of sailboats and cruising boats together," said Mr. Rowe, who will be skippering his boat, Wild Honey, accompanied by his golden retriever, Libby.

This is the last of four races that the Mackinac Island Yacht Club has sponsored this summer. The other races were the Around the Island Race, which is always held just after the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, Mackinac Island to Manitoulin Island Race, and the Fourth of July around-theisland race.
