Concert Series To Conclude With Heather May

The Mackinac Island Community Foundation's summer concert series will conclude Sunday, August 31, with flutist Heather May and pianist Angela Beidenbender. The concert begins at 2 p.m. at Ste. Anne's Church and is free to the public.

The concert, which is entitled "A Romantic Turn of the Century," features music from the romantic era, turn-of-thecentury music, and music from French composers.

In the past, Ms. May and Ms. Beidenbender have focused on contemporary music, but have decided to return to some of the classic flute repertoire, including music by Beethoven, Chopin, Honegger, Tansman, and Ganne.

"It's really important to understand how we got to the modern and avant-garde music that we have today," said Ms. May. "It's amazing to see how much classical music has changed."

Ms. May, a graduate of Central Michigan University, has performed as part of the concert series for the past two years. This summer, she is serving as volunteer coordinator with the Mackinac Arts Council, as well as continuing to perform at various churches and weddings on the Island. During the winter months, Ms. May teaches in the East Lansing area and performs with local ensembles.

Ms. Beidenbender, also a graduate of Central Michigan University, teaches elementary general music classes and maintains a private piano studio in Ann Arbor.

Ms. May said they are eager to bring music to Mackinac Island as part of the concert series.

"I'm happy to be able to share this music with the community and my hometown," she said.
