Fire Protection Agreement Is Renewed for 5 years

A five-year fire protection agreement between the City of Mackinac Island and the Mackinac Island State Park Commission was approved by the Mackinac Island City Council at its January 28 meeting.

In exchange for fire protection of the state park and its buildings, the commission will plow city streets in the winter, provide diesel fuel for the city's fire trucks, and lease the city's Fire Station #2 property near Surrey Hill for $1 a year.

The park commission had asked for a 20-year agreement but the city rejected the offer. There are no changes to the old agreement, which also was for five years and expired January 31. The Park Commission approved the renewed agreement at its meeting in East Lansing Wednesday, January 14.

It had asked for 20 years to conform to its other agreements and leases.
